ABOUT THE ARTIST
Durrell Smith is inspired by exploring man's connection with nature and the lessons that nature teaches us. He spends his time in the outdoors to receive the energies and messages transmitted through nature to create works that highlight a southern vernacular and perspective on his millennial, African-American experience.  Embracing the histories of our ancestors and orating the stories on an early childhood, learning, building, and crafting in his grandfather's backyard, what he calls the "Garden of Eden", he sees his work as. an exploration to create for God, for the Church (both literally and figuratively) and for the Museum.

The works of Durrell Smith consists of a love and passion for primitive and indigenous peoples of the an African-American past, the cultural appreciation for African-American South, and a curiosity of the great outdoors following the study of man's relationship to the natural world as it exists in a contemporary context. It is a dissection of the human psyche, a conversation with nature, and an observation of mark-making and line. The creative process process is very activated and instinctual, and the works begin and conclude outdoors allowing the elements to transmit a spirit and vitality to each piece while incorporating found objects that function as placeholders in time that complement marks that induce primitivism and a worldly connection.  Moreover, the works become a metaphor for the stories passed down  through the vessel of time.
